Tech buying guidesKindle vs Paperwhite: compare the differences

Tech · Research-based buying guide

The simpler Kindle is probably enough.

Amazon Kindle (2024, 16 GB)

You do not need the fanciest e-reader to get through your reading pile. The basic Kindle keeps the important parts: sharp text, a compact body, and USB-C charging. It leaves out water resistance and adjustable warm lighting.

A good fit if…

People who want a small, dedicated reading device without paying for features they rarely use.

Skip it if…

You read by the pool, need warm lighting, or already own an e-reader you enjoy.

What actually matters

Wirecutter recommends the 2024 basic Kindle for most readers, with the Paperwhite as an upgrade. That is a useful reminder to start with the less elaborate option.

The 6-inch screen is smaller than the Paperwhite’s 7-inch display. Portability is the upside; seeing less text at once is the trade-off.

It is not waterproof and does not offer adjustable color temperature. If those are things you genuinely need, compare the Paperwhite before ordering.

An e-reader makes the most sense if reading is already part of your life. Try an ebook on a device you own before buying hardware just to start a new habit.
