Excellent quiet, without pretending it is cheap.
Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony’s XM5 headphones remain an easy premium shortlist choice for strong noise cancellation, long battery life, and comfortable everyday listening. Their successor exists, which makes the XM5 most interesting when the price is meaningfully lower.
A good fit if…
Travelers, open-office workers, and anyone who values noise reduction more than a compact folding design.
Skip it if…
You need headphones that fold very small, prefer earbuds, or will not use noise cancellation often enough to justify the price.
What actually matters
The XM5 combines active noise cancellation with a rated battery life of up to 30 hours with noise cancellation on. Real battery life varies with volume, calls, and settings.
They pivot flat but do not fold inward like some older travel headphones. The included case takes up real room in a bag.
The newer XM6 model means the XM5 is no longer the automatic newest-is-best purchase. Compare current prices rather than paying near-launch pricing for an older generation.
Sound and comfort are personal. If possible, try the headband and ear cups before committing—especially if you wear glasses or listen for hours at a time.
