The serious knife that still feels friendly.
Mac MTH-80 Chef’s Knife
A good chef’s knife should disappear into the job. The Mac MTH-80 is a long-running independent-review favorite because it is sharp, balanced, and nimble. It is also an expensive tool that deserves careful hand washing and storage.
A good fit if…
Frequent home cooks who want one versatile knife and will maintain it properly.
Skip it if…
You want a dishwasher-safe knife, prefer a heavier German-style blade, or only cook occasionally.
What actually matters
Wirecutter names the MTH-80 its top chef’s knife pick, praising its sharp edge, balance, and comfortable handle. We have not repeated that testing.
The dimpled blade is designed to reduce food sticking, but no knife makes every potato or onion slide away perfectly.
Hand wash and dry it promptly. A knife block, magnetic strip, or blade guard is safer for the edge than tossing it into a crowded drawer.
Try a knife in person if you can. Handle shape, weight, and balance are personal in a way specification sheets cannot fully capture.
